months ahead. but, first, do you think the three years since president obama signed the affordable care act into law have been turbulent, period marked by relentless and unanimous resistance from the opposition to establish law, consider this. president franklin roosevelt rolled out a series of programs he designed to combat the great depression, programs to build things, grow things, establish union rights and retirement programs for some federal workers. when fdr established the new deal, he, too, was met with fierce opposition. not just from members of the other party, but from the courts. during roosevelt's first term as president, the supreme court declared parts of his program unconstitutional. naturally that did not sit well with fdr so he sent congress a bill that would give the president the authority to appoint one new supreme court justice for every sitting justice over the age of 70. since there were six justices over 70 years old back then, that would mean six new justices. presumably all of them democrats. fdr lost the new deal rulings 6-3, but on a 15-member court with si

obama by a concerned citizen i believe has been misinterpreted by the right. plus it will give me an excuse to tell you my story about having the president as a pen pal. what does the iran contra scandal have to do with the pardon of the white house turkey? pretty much everything. we will, plane ahead. >>> it seems on thanksgiving itself here to make a plea for us to stop the insanity and finally, helping me, i usually call finding ways to humiliate me. earlier this week they have found a way to do it on national television. they arranged for me to dock a turkey on the air. since i only recently learned how to turn an oven on, this could get a little ugly. stay tuned for that. >>> speaking of recipes for disaster, though, we gen this morning with what congress is doing or rather everything that congress is not doing. we are about to reach december. there are some serious budget issues to work out, some key deadlines looming. congress is right now scheduled to be in session this coming month for a grand total of four days. msnbc news ran the numbers and reported in the 11 months since

-- how much of it comes from the election of president obama, and the emergence. we talk about the emergence of this new democratic coalition that -- the rising demographic coalition. you look at who potentially is affected by this, in a lot of cases, members of the coalition. >> so, you know it was interesting, i was looking back at greg abbott's involvement with voter fraud claims and they go back before president obama, you know, in 2006, a big push to prosecute people who help the elderly vote by mail. it was almost entirely latino and african-american kind of volunteers who are helping members of their communities to cast ballots by mail, but they didn't check the right box or took it the wrong way. and they were prosecuted for that. it goes back before -- 2008, though, really did change the game and i think, you know, if you're familiar -- you covered true the vote, groups like that, that were actively going into polls with polling sites and saying, you know, we think there is fraud happening here that we're going to be able to see, that really got fully started post obama --

obama care. it is not just republicans. last week senator chuck schumer from new york signed a letter to secretary of state john kerry saying he didn't feel the terms of the agreement being discussed go far enough. pointed out that they don't even, quote, require iran to even meet the terms the prior u.n. security council resolutions. so how significant is the temporary agreement reached today in geneva? the very fact that an agreement has been reached after ten years of negotiations and more than three decades of authoritarian rule in iran, is that by itself significant enough? to discuss this wasn't to bring in now mark jacobson, senior advicer to the truman national security project, which trains leaders on national security issues. mark, i know you support this deal. i guess you're here to say this morning, yeah, the sanctions worked and we're getting something real because of it. >> well, we have a significant first step here at challenging iranian sincerity. you summarized it perfectly. not only is this going to be -- this has brought the iranians into the game, but we no

obama in the winter of 2008 and was taken that the ultimate sign of the party establishment embracing the young first term senator. that's not always what the kennedy name represented. they were the outsiders in the democratic party, right up until the moment jfk won the white house. his triumph wasn't the story of the democratic party electing its candidate, it was the story of a family that created its own party within a party, a party built around jfk, a party that eclipsed the rest of the party, a party that became the party. it begins with joseph p. kennedy, born in east boston, 1888, son of a respected businessman. went to harvard, but the banking elite didn't want to let an irish catholic in. so made his own way in and found himself president of the bank at the age of 25. married the mayor's daughter, made a large family, went to new enterprises, the movies, hollywood, played the stock market so well that the crash of 1929 barely touched him. and then went into politics. backing franklin roosevelt in 1932. fdr awarded joe kennedy with a number of high positions, chair

polls give obama higher approval numbers, still the lowest he had sense he became president. asked who they want to have more influence over if country, obama or republicans in congress, the answer was pretty much a wash. the holidays fast approaching, the end of 2013, beyond that, it raises the question of what will the parties be rung on in the 20 froen mid-terms. can they say? our job approval numbers are down, the american people are unhappy with us. pleads vote for us anyway. you are more unhappy with those guys. it seemed to work for democrats weeks ago when voters more than they embraced democrat harry mcauliffe. now republicans are convinced they have a winning negative message of their own thanks to the obama care rollout headaches. i guess i'll throw this open to the panel. if we had this discussion three weeks ago i would have been talking about the virginia governor's race a couple weeks ago, the fallout from the shutdown and the debt ceiling brinksmanship. they would have said, well, i haven't seen a republican brand this poisonous since impeachment in 1988. the intafs non

patient protection and affordable care act. obama care they now call it in the house of representatives. this was the decisive vote. it already had cleared the senate. it had survived a last minute controversy over abortion coverage. now, finally after decades, after generations of false starts and dead endings, here was the vote. will the bill pass and make it to president obama's desk? yes, it did pass, 2 fifteen 19 to 212. it passed with every single republican in the chamber. all 178 of them back then voting against it. it passed with 34 democrats, some of them blue dog conservative democrats who were philosophically opposed to the concept. some democrats who were scared of paying a political vote. it paced with 34 democrats voting no there was a buzz in the air in the house chamber that night. national health care had been a dream since harry truman's presidency. that was about to become reality. republicans were excited for a different reason. they'd spent the last year screaming and shouting of a government takeover of health care, about socialized medicine and death panels and w
